Prokazyme and University of Groningen enter into strategic cooperation on marketing demonstration of selected enzymes
Prokazyme ltd and The University of Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB) and its research group Microbial Physiology, announced the signing of a cooperation agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Prokazyme will demonstrate and market selected enzymes developed by the Microbial Physiology research group at the University of Groningen. Under the agreement Prokazyme will formulate the enzymes into marketable products as reagents for laboratories using the enzymes for research and diagnostics. The enzyme reagents will then be sold by Prokazyme on the internet. The first enzyme that will be demonstrated under this agreement is a novel glucansucrase enzyme (GTFA) that converts sucrose into alpha-glucan polysaccharides and oligosaccharides with alpha1,4 and alpha1,6 linkages.
This agreement is resulting from a collaboration of the partners in the European project AMYLOMICS that was funded by EU in the 7th framework program. The aim of the project is to develop new, robust enzymes for the starch and carbohydrate industries (www.amylomics.org).
Prokazyme, based in Reykjavik, Iceland, developes enzymes from the natural diversity of various extreme environments.Prokazyme mainly sells novel enzymes for research, diagnostic and industrial testing purposes on the internet (www.prokazyme.com). The University of Groningen is a research university with a global outlook, deeply rooted in Groningen, the City of Talent. Based on its focus on quality and success in many fields, the University of Groningen ranks among the 100 most influential Universities in the World.
The University of Groningen Microbial Physiology research group uses multidisciplinary approaches to study metabolic processes in microbial cells. In the research line “carbohydrate acting enzymes” structure/function relationships of enzymes acting on both starch and sucrose are studied with respect to their 3D protein structures and their reaction mechanisms for further improvement of the enzyme activities by protein engineering.
