Improved high sensitivity measurement
Many test applications require the measurement of the resistivity (surface and volume resistivity) of high grade materials. The traditional measurement method is to apply a high enough voltage to the sample, measure the current flowing through the sample, and then calculate its resistance using ohm's law (R=V /I). Although very small currents are generated by high-resistance materials and devices and are difficult to measure accurately, such measurements can be made successfully with the keithley electrometer and picoammeter.
Even with high-precision instruments, the background current inherent in the material makes accurate measurements difficult. Because of piezoelectric effect, capacitance effect and polarization effect, insulating materials, polymers and plastics usually show background current. These background currents are generally equal to or greater than the current produced by applying a voltage. In these cases, the measurement results are often unstable, generating inaccurate resistance or resistivity readings or even erroneous negative values. The keesley 6517B electrometer/high resistance meter is designed to address these issues and provide consistent, repeatable and accurate measurements for a variety of materials and components, especially when used with the type 8009 resistance test fixture.
